Ulysses S. Grant was a great Union general during the Civil War. He gained control of many places including Chattanooga, Vicksburg, Ft. Donnelson, and Ft. Henry. Grant directed
William T. Sherman south while he led the Army of the Potomac to Richmond. Grant's goal was
to pin down Robert E. Lee and control the Confederate capital. Lee finally surrendered to Grant
on April 9, 1865. Grant made sure that Lee wouldn't be tried for treason after his surrender.
